“I’m worried about my child, and I don’t know where to turn.” That heartbreaking
statement is something that is echoed almost every day by families affected by
autism. As recently as 10 years ago, Michigan was ranked one of the worst states to live in for an individual on the autism spectrum. The healthcare, education, and employment systems that must be navigated are so complex and disconnected from one another that families often feel confused, discouraged, and left behind.

My name is Gary Schlack. I am a Trustee here at Father Saylor and a City Councilman in Allen Park.  It was only a year and a half ago when my wife Bridget and I didn’t know where to turn when our oldest son Gary Jr. was diagnosed with autism. Gary Jr. is a funny, goofy, and smart kiddo who has just something that makes him a little bit more special to all of us! Yet, we were distraught and
confused.

We knew that with the power of God, our family, and our extended family at the Knights of Columbus, hope was not only possible, but within reach. It wasn’t long after when we found the Autism Alliance of Michigan. The organization has been a breath of fresh air. It has provided a wealth of information and access to comprehensive services, community awareness, inclusion efforts, and coordinated
advocacy.

Families who benefit from the Autism Alliance of Michigan have free access to:
• Education about the early signs of autism and how/where to seek a diagnosis.
• Information about autism resource services.
• Council and guidance for crisis situations.
• And so much more!

On August 20th, we invite you, our extended family, to join us at our No Family Left Behind: Autism Awareness Fundraiser Dinner to benefit families affected by autism. The dinner will be $15 per person and consist of mostaccioli, bread sticks, salad, and cookies. Come hungry! Leave full! Bring the family! Bring a friend! All proceeds to be donated to the Autism Alliance of Michigan. If you are unable to make it, please consider donating to the Autism Alliance of Michigan 2022 Annual Hero Walk at the Detroit Zoo with Gary Schlack, Jr. as your sponsor child, details found at:

Thank you and God bless!
